Iran Promises Swift Trials for Arrested Protesters

Iran has announced that “swift” trials will be held for suspects arrested during the recent protests, while international human rights organizations express fears of a widespread use of the death penalty. The protests have shaken Iran since December 28th and have led to the country’s isolation from the rest of the world. Funerals were held in Tehran for more than 100 members of the security forces and other “martyrs” killed in the protests. Those gathered waved flags of the Islamic Republic and held banners with slogans such as “Death to America.” According to Iranian media, the head of the judiciary promised “swift” and “public” trials after a visit to a Tehran prison where protesters are being held. He stated that those who have committed arson or are accused of serious acts will face immediate justice. Organizations such as Amnesty International are concerned about impending executions, reporting information about a first protester scheduled to be executed on January 14th. US diplomacy has also promoted this information. Iran accuses the US of seeking a “pretext” for military intervention.
