The Paradox of Education in Cyprus: Last in Europe

Cyprus ranks at the lowest level in the European Union in Mathematics, Reading, and Science, according to the 2022 PISA results. The Cypriot education system is characterized by high pressure, an emphasis on exams, and a transfer of education to tutoring centers, leading to rote learning and a lack of understanding. The Minister of Education acknowledges that the system rewards memorization rather than genuine knowledge and skills. The Ministry proposes changes, such as reducing the curriculum and emphasizing skills, but students and teachers are calling for more radical changes, such as less material, fewer exams, and more meaning in education. Countries like Estonia and Ireland, with better PISA scores, emphasize reading, comprehension, autonomy, and assessment that encourages rather than intimidates. The problem is deeply rooted and requires political and social commitment to achieve substantial changes.
