The Feudal Legacy and Cyprus's Relationship with the EU

The article explores the contradiction between the stagnation of administrative structures and the progress of thought in 18th-century Europe. Despite changes on the map and the rise of the Enlightenment, feudal structures remained strong, leading to violence and upheaval when new ideas were attempted, as in the French Revolution. Cyprus, in the context of its presidency of the European Council, presents a similar contradiction: while benefiting from EU membership, citizens' faith in the EU remains low. This is due to the fact that accession did not result from internal maturity, but from a strategic link with Turkey-EU relations and the Cyprus issue. Cyprus's approach to the EU has been pragmatic rather than ideological, leading to a perception of benefits as guaranteed and a focus on the EU's failures to resolve the Cyprus problem. This mindset hinders the full exploitation of the opportunities offered by European integration.
