750,000 Vehicle License Renewals Pending, 11,000 Recalls Outstanding

Approximately 750,000 vehicle owners will need to renew their licenses for 2026, according to Konstantinos Kouppis, an official at the Department of Road Transport (TOM). The renewal process began on January 7th and will continue until March 11th, with no extensions planned. The renewal is done online and requires a valid vehicle roadworthiness and safety certificate. Furthermore, around 11,000 vehicles will be unable to renew their licenses due to outstanding airbag replacements. Of these, approximately 7,000 have exceeded the deadline set by the Ministry of Transport and are now considered immobilized. TOM has received assurances from companies that the replacement process is progressing, with an implementation rate of over 90%. Mr. Kouppis emphasized that vehicle owners with pending airbag recalls must first resolve this issue, as well as the vehicle roadworthiness certificate, before being able to issue a new license. To ensure the renewal is complete, owners should see the 'print license' message and their vehicle details on the screen. There will be a financial penalty for those who renew their license after the deadline. TOM has strengthened the system with additional safeguards to ensure the smooth operation of the process.
