Evidence Points to Russian Origin of Disinformation Video Targeting Cyprus

Investigations into the origin of the edited video that caused unrest in Cyprus indicate strong evidence of Russian involvement. Experts from state agencies conclude that it is an organized hybrid operation, with characteristics of Russian disinformation campaigns, such as the Doppelganger campaign. This campaign has been used in other EU countries, including France, the US, Germany, and Israel, to spread misinformation. The practice of publishing anonymous videos with the aim of blackmailing or politically exhausting opponents, known as “kompromat,” is reminiscent of tactics often used in Russia. One of the individuals who approached Cypriot officials to steal conversations spoke English with an Eastern European accent. The release of the video coincides with important developments for Cyprus, such as the assumption of the Presidency of the Council of the EU, the visit of the Ukrainian President, and discussions about an American air base. The Intelligence Service and the Police are investigating the case.
