Hamas: Will Not Lay Down Arms Ahead of Trump-Netanyahu Meeting

The armed wing of Hamas, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, stated today, once again, that it will not lay down its arms, hours before the meeting of US President Donald Trump with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Florida, during which the two leaders are expected to discuss the future of Gaza. In addition, they confirmed the death of their spokesman, Abu Ubaida, who had been announced by Israel in August. The successor to Abu Ubaida stated in a video posted on Telegram that “our people are defending themselves and will not lay down their arms as long as the occupation continues. They will not surrender, even if they have to fight with their bare hands.” This statement is a clear response to efforts to begin the second phase of the ceasefire, which provides for the disarmament of Hamas. Hamas calls on all parties involved to work for the disarmament of the “occupation forces,” accusing them of using lethal weapons against the Palestinian people. This position suggests that Hamas does not see itself as part of the problem, but as a victim of Israeli occupation. In summary, Hamas confirms its refusal to disarm and accuses Israel of continued violence, thus creating obstacles to efforts to achieve a sustainable peace in Gaza.
