Expected Increase in Seasonal Infections – Hospitals Prepared

An increase in seasonal infections is expected due to low temperatures and holiday gatherings, according to Charalambos Charilaou, spokesperson for the Cyprus Public Health Care Organization (OKYPY). Public hospitals are fully prepared to manage this increase, having already activated Rapid Patient Flow Clinics to serve non-emergency cases. There has been an increased influx of patients to the Emergency Departments, mainly due to the leave of personal and specialist doctors during the holidays. Mr. Charilaou mentioned that cases of influenza A are being hospitalized, mainly individuals with underlying conditions and elderly people with weakened immune systems. He advised the public to limit their movements and gatherings, as well as avoid contact with vulnerable groups, especially the elderly. Although there are no restrictive measures, preventative behavior is important to limit the spread of viruses. The increase in cases is also due to confinement in closed spaces due to the cold, without adequate ventilation. Mr. Charilaou emphasized the importance of ventilating spaces during gatherings, as well as frequent hand washing. Hospitals assure that they are ready to cope with any further increase in cases and provide the necessary care. The situation is being closely monitored and all necessary measures are being taken to protect public health.
