Dozens Killed in Iran Protests, Calls for US Intervention

More than 50 protesters have been killed in Iran since the start of demonstrations on December 28th, according to the NGO Iran Human Rights. Among the dead are 9 children under the age of 18. Simultaneously, Iranian authorities have imposed a complete internet blackout for over 24 hours, as part of an effort to suppress the protests. The son of the former Shah of Iran, Reza Pahlavi, has appealed to Donald Trump to intervene immediately in the Islamic Republic, asking him to be ready to help the Iranian people. Pahlavi accused the authorities of repression and cutting off access to the internet. Trump had previously threatened a strong response if Iranian authorities killed protesters. The demonstrations, which began as a reaction to the rising cost of living, have escalated and now pose a serious challenge to the regime. Iran accuses the US and Israel of inciting the protests, while authorities continue to suppress the demonstrations and restrict access to information.
