Kyiv Faces Heating Outages After Russian Strikes

Approximately 1,700 apartment buildings in Kyiv remain without heating following a Russian missile and drone attack earlier this week, according to city mayor Vitali Klitschko. Moscow has intensified its bombardment of Ukraine's energy system since the invasion in 2022, resulting in around 1.2 million properties across the country losing power during the recent offensive. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that Russia's primary targets are the energy sector, critical infrastructure, and residential buildings, stating that over 1,700 drone and missile attacks were launched against Ukraine this week alone. Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba reported that over 3,200 buildings in Kyiv were without heating initially, but the number has decreased to around 1,600 as utility crews and energy companies have restored service. Restoration efforts are ongoing to meet the needs of all residents. During a visit to Lithuania, Zelenskyy appealed for increased support for Ukraine, highlighting the threat posed by Russia. The situation is critical, given the freezing temperatures and the urgent need to restore essential services. This attack is part of a broader Russian strategy to destabilize Ukraine by targeting its energy infrastructure and causing hardship for the population during the winter months.
