Hymns for the Cyprus Issue to be Introduced During Holy Week

The Holy Synod of Cyprus has decided to compose special hymns referring to the Cyprus issue, integrating them into the liturgical life of the Church. The decision was made following a proposal by the Archbishop and with the unanimous agreement of the Synod members. These hymns will be added to the three stations of the Lamentations on Good Friday. Their purpose is to serve as supplications for the resolution of the Cyprus problem and to strengthen national unity. The decision has drawn comments from theologians, such as Theodoros Kyriakou, who expressed the view that the addition of these hymns diminishes the importance of the traditional Lamentations, which have a resurrectional character. He argued that the Church should carefully consider whether the new hymns will be truly effective in prayerfully expressing the problem.
