With Cyprus taking over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union on January 1, 2026, Eurostat presents statistics for the country. Cyprus covers 0.2% of the EU’s area and population, with a population density of 104 inhabitants per square kilometer. Despite its small size, Cyprus has the highest household investment rate in the EU. The country’s GDP per capita is €35,730, lower than the EU average of €39,940. Cyprus shows a surplus of 4.1% of GDP and lower public debt (62.8% of GDP) compared to the EU average. In terms of population, the percentage of people over 65 is lower than the EU average, while unemployment is also lower (4.9%). Cyprus ranks third in the EU regarding the completion of tertiary education, but has a higher rate of early school leaving. Finally, spending on research and development is low (0.68% of GDP) and the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is greater than the EU average.
