A. Emilianides: Correct and Institutionally Imposed Appointment of Independent Criminal Investigator

Attorney General Achilleas Emilianides stated that the appointment of an independent criminal investigator to investigate the video posted on “X” concerning potential criminal offenses is a correct and institutionally imposed choice. The video features individuals and has sparked debate about its authenticity. Mr. Emilianides explained that the publication of the video, regardless of whether it is edited, requires an investigation into both its content and the purposes for which it was published. He stressed that conducting an investigation does not presuppose the commission of offenses, but aims to determine whether and by whom they may have been committed. He pointed out that the choice of an independent investigator is correct due to the public dimension of the case and the involvement of individuals connected to the government. He recalled that a similar practice has been followed in the past in important cases. Regarding the investigator's mandate, Mr. Emilianides clarified that it should have a sufficient scope to investigate all necessary evidence without requiring the issuance of new mandates at each stage. He expressed his confidence that the appointed investigator, an experienced former judge, will be able to maintain his independence during the investigation.
