AI Companies as Modern Technofascism: An Interview with Lousia Avraamidou

Lousia Avraamidou, Professor of Science Education, describes large Artificial Intelligence (AI) companies as a modern example of technofascism and centralism. She points out that social media “rots” the human brain, as the content we consume is selected by algorithms and does not require substantial information processing. Continuous exposure to digital platforms has negative effects on mental health, such as bullying, misinformation, body image issues, decreased concentration, and increased anxiety. Dopamine, a substance released with every confirmation on social media, can lead to addiction. Avraamidou states that learning requires active and in-depth engagement with something, which does not happen with scrolling through social media. The passive consumption of information in a short period of time does not allow for meaningful processing and storage of information in long-term memory. Finally, the professor emphasizes the need for critical thinking and avoiding passive consumption of information in order to protect our mental and spiritual health.
