Air Travel: EP Rejects Proposals for Weaker Passenger Rights

The European Parliament has rejected proposals from the Council and the European Commission to reform the rules on air passenger rights. MEPs insist on free hand luggage, free seats for children under 12, and higher compensation for flight delays, of at least three hours. The rejection was by a large majority (632 votes in favor, 15 against, and 9 abstentions). Current regulations provide for compensation of between €250 and €600 for delays of more than three hours. Airlines, through the Airlines for Europe (A4E) association, are pushing for a relaxation of the rules, citing distortion of competition and higher operating costs. The Parliament believes that the Council's proposals undermine passenger rights.
