Akar: Turkish Army Will Remain in Cyprus Until Peace is Achieved

Turkey is in favor of peace and tranquility in Cyprus and its military presence on the island will continue until that is achieved, Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar stated in the occupied territories. Speaking in the occupied territories, Mr. Akar accused the Greek Cypriot side and Greece of having a “selfish approach” to the Cyprus issue, saying that their public statements differ from their expressions in bilateral meetings. Mr. Akar claimed that Turkey remains steadfast in its position for resolving problems through dialogue and diplomacy, emphasizing that its military presence is necessary for peace and tranquility. He stated that Turkey will continue to be in Cyprus until peace and tranquility are achieved. The statements by Mr. Akar come at a time of increased tension in the region and after statements by President Christodoulides regarding the Cyprus issue. Turkey has maintained a military presence in the occupied territories since 1974, following its invasion of Cyprus. The statement by Mr. Akar reiterates Turkey's position that its military presence is necessary to protect Turkish Cypriots and maintain peace in Cyprus, a position rejected by the Republic of Cyprus and the international community.
