AKEL Condemns US Intervention in Venezuela - “Imperialist Act”

AKEL strongly condemned the United States' operation in Venezuela, describing it as an “imperialist intervention” and a violation of international law. The party expressed its solidarity with the Venezuelan people, emphasizing that the arrest of Nicolás Maduro and his family constitutes a blatant interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state. AKEL argues that the US actions are part of a revival of the Monroe Doctrine, aiming for political, military, and economic control over Latin America and the Caribbean. It points out that Venezuela, due to its vast oil reserves, is a particularly targeted country. The AKEL statement stresses that the military attack and the arrest of an incumbent president without UN approval violate the UN Charter, the principle of sovereign equality of states, and the prohibition of the use of force. It condemns the lack of respect for international law. AKEL calls on the international community to condemn the intervention and defend international law, peace, and the right of peoples to decide their own future. It expresses its unwavering solidarity with the Venezuelan people in the face of US aggression.
