AKEL: Will Reintroduce Proposal for Protection of Primary Residence in Case of Court Appeal

AKEL announces that it will reintroduce a proposal to the Parliament for the protection of primary residence in the event of debtors appealing to the courts. The aim of the proposal is to automatically suspend the foreclosure process when the borrower resorts to justice. Harris Polycarpou, head of AKEL's economic sector, accused the government of a lack of understanding regarding the foreclosure problem, arguing that it has only been solved for the banks and not for citizens who owe money to credit acquisition companies. He believes that the legal framework needs to change to protect borrowers as well. Furthermore, Mr. Polycarpou emphasized that in cases of an agreement for the voluntary surrender of the residence, the debt should be written off. He reminded of the failure to implement the ESTIA 2 plan, which the government had promised to address the problem. He also expressed concern about the lack of adequate control and supervision by the Central Bank over credit acquisition companies, which could lead to unfair practices and harm borrowers.
