Akio Toyoda Honored with “Golden Steering Wheel”

Akio Toyoda was honored with the “Golden Steering Wheel” in Brussels, recognizing his overall contribution to the automotive industry. This award, established in 1976, is considered one of the most important in the European automotive industry and this particular distinction is awarded to personalities who have left a significant mark on the sector. Toyoda took over as president of Toyota Motor Corporation in 2009, during a difficult period for the automotive industry, and managed to significantly improve the company's financial and commercial results, especially in Europe. He continues to play a key role in the company as Chairman of the Board. The award committee symbolically described him as the “Golden Steering Wheel for the Driver,” recognizing both his leadership skills and his personal passion for driving. His involvement in driving began with the challenge set by his mentor, Hiromu Naruse, to learn to drive before judging cars. Adopting the pseudonym “Morizo,” Toyoda participated in races at the Nürburgring, including the 24-hour race, and earned the title of Master Driver for the Toyota and Lexus brands. Upon receiving the award, he emphasized the need for greater collaboration in the automotive industry, thanking Toyota's employees and customers for the inspiration they provide.
