Archbishop Proposes Significant Changes to the Church of Cyprus Charter

The Archbishop of Cyprus, Georgios, announced that he will propose changes to the Church of Cyprus's Charter during the next Holy Synod session on January 8th. The most significant proposal concerns changing the method of electing hierarchs, so they are elected by the Holy Synod itself, with the exception of the Archbishop. The announcement was made on the sidelines of a solemn doxology for the start of the new year, at the Cathedral of St. Barnabas, attended by the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Klea Papaellina, and representatives of political parties. The Deputy Minister referred to the assumption of the Presidency of the Council and Cyprus's goal of contributing to the strengthening of the European Union. The Archbishop assured that the Church will support the government's efforts and will meet with foreign leaders, including the President of Ukraine, Zelensky.
