Arnaoutis ready to clash with unions over working hours to boost policing

Police Chief Themistos Arnaoutis has indicated he is prepared to take tough measures to enhance policing and increase the presence of officers in the field. During a press conference, he presented his plan for the modernization and upgrading of the Cyprus Police, based on three pillars. However, the most controversial aspect of the plan is the proposed change in working hours for approximately 1,000 police officers, from 12-hour shifts to 11-hour shifts. Mr. Arnaoutis believes this will free up 100 officers for additional policing duties, while also reducing rest days by 15 days per year. This proposal has sparked strong reactions from trade unions, such as the Cyprus Police Association (PASYDY) and the Police Corps Branch (“ISOTITA”). However, the Chief appeared determined to implement the plan, emphasizing his good cooperation with the unions, but also the need to improve police efficiency. Mr. Arnaoutis expressed the view that it is paradoxical for police officers to want to work more than their employer (the Police). He stressed that he understands the difficulties of working on the front lines, but believes that changing the working hours is essential to enhance public safety.
