Athens FIR Chaos: Technical Failures and Outdated Infrastructure to Blame

A series of technical failures and outdated infrastructure led to the unprecedented suspension of operations of the Athens FIR on Sunday, January 4, 2026, according to the official report. The incident, which caused a complete disruption of air traffic, was not due to a cyberattack, but to an internal malfunction of the Civil Aviation Authority's communication systems. Specifically, the report mentions “digital noise” caused by the desynchronization of transmitters, resulting in the degradation or interruption of telecommunications links. The ΥΠΑ's Voice Communication System (VCS) relies on outdated SDH technology and analog circuits, which have been discontinued by their manufacturers. The chaos began at 08:58 when air traffic controllers noticed a massive blockage of radio frequencies, with intense noise occupying the primary, backup, and emergency frequencies. Simultaneously, ground-to-ground communication links collapsed, interrupting telephone and data communication with neighboring FIRs and airports. The committee provides specific proposals for upgrading the infrastructure, emphasizing the need for investment in modern technology and the replacement of outdated systems. ΟΤΕ had warned as early as 2019 about the lack of support for these specific systems, confirming the validity of the report's findings.
