Attorney General Supports Initiative to Limit Parliamentary Immunity

Attorney General George Savvides expressed his satisfaction with the Legal Committee's initiative to revisit the issue of limiting parliamentary immunity. The bill, which has been pending for years, concerns the determination of the minimum rights that must be protected when exercising parliamentary duties. Savvides described the initiative of the parliamentarians as particularly important and emphasized the willingness to cooperate to shape a framework acceptable to the Parliament. The possibility of different treatment for certain offenses not related to the performance of a parliamentarian's duties was discussed, without requiring a lifting of immunity.
