Beyond Skills: The Importance of Humanities in Education

The recent World Education Day passed with relatively little attention, marked by standard announcements. The European Union is emphasizing education as a central pillar of competitiveness and digital transition, with a new “Education Package” expected this year and 2026 designated as a milestone year for the European dimension in education. However, the article expresses concern that education is becoming overly focused on vocational training and digital readiness, neglecting the development of well-rounded individuals and the cultivation of humanistic values. The humanities are considered essential for addressing technocratic alienation and strengthening critical thinking, empathy, and ethical judgment – skills crucial for citizen participation in a digital society. The EU is urged to invest in a balanced educational model that combines technological advancement with timeless humanistic values.
