Challenges Ahead for the Cyprus Health System in 2026

The Cyprus Health Insurance Organization (HIO) faces significant challenges for 2026, following a period of stabilization and maturity of the General Health System (GHS). The main challenges include improving and upgrading the GHS software, definitively stabilizing the patient referral abroad and specialized medicine programs, and strengthening internal governance. The HIO's Director-General, Ifigeneia Kamitsis, emphasized that the priority is to improve the quality of health services for the benefit of beneficiaries. The HIO is seeking a targeted evolution of the GHS, based on data and user needs, with a focus on efficiency and effectiveness. For 2025, the HIO aimed to integrate patient referrals abroad and the provision of specialized medicines. The new year will focus on the financial sustainability of the GHS, its modernization, the control of abuses, and the promotion of the rational use of services. The process of sending patients abroad was officially transferred to the HIO from the Ministry of Health on October 2nd. The HIO expects to continue improving procedures and ensuring the effective management of resources to meet the needs of patients.
