Changes Proposed for Property Ownership Laws in Cyprus

The Parliamentary Committee on Interior discussed a package of proposed laws to amend legislation regarding the acquisition of real estate in Cyprus by citizens of third countries. MP Nikos Georgiou of DISY stated that the issue is critical and requires modernization of the legal framework, without resorting to populism. Mr. Georgiou emphasized that concerns do not stem from the development of the real estate sector, but from the need to maintain balances, safeguard the public interest, and national security. He highlighted the importance of attracting quality investments, but also carefully managing land ownership. AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou mentioned that AKEL has submitted two bills to introduce controls, restrictions, and objective criteria in the sale of properties to citizens of third countries, due to the problem of uncontrolled land sales. There was unanimous agreement within the Committee on the existence of the problem and the need to address it. Discussions focused on the implications of uncontrolled property sales for national security and the price of properties for Cypriot citizens.
