Cran-Montana Bar Fire: Owners Questioned by Prosecutors

The owners of the bar in Cran-Montana where 40 people, half of whom were minors, lost their lives in a New Year's Eve fire have been summoned to testify before the prosecutor today. Swiss authorities are investigating the case for manslaughter, while families of the victims have filed lawsuits. The couple, Jacques and Jessica Moretti, did not make any statements upon entering the prosecutor's office, but have expressed their sorrow and pledged full cooperation with the investigation. The fire appears to have started from the use of sparklers on champagne bottles, causing the foam insulation material on the basement ceiling to ignite. Questions are being raised about the safety inspections of the premises, as the local mayor has admitted that the bar had failed several of them. Of the 40 fatalities, 21 were Swiss, 7 French, 6 Italian, one with dual Swiss-French citizenship, and one Franco-British-Israeli. The tragedy has caused shock and grief throughout Europe, and the presidents of France and Italy are expected to attend the memorial service. Prosecutors have stated that there is insufficient evidence to justify the couple's detention, despite the serious charges they face. The investigation is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances of the fire and assign responsibility.
