Cran Montana: 'Everyone was pushing desperately, as if there was no tomorrow,' says survivor

A night of terror in Switzerland. A fire that broke out at Le Constellation, a bar in the luxury ski resort of Cran Montana, caused the death of at least forty people and injured around 115, according to the latest official report released on Thursday, January 1st. The President of the Swiss Confederation, Guy Parmelin, spoke of “one of the worst tragedies the country has experienced,” describing the event as “a drama of unprecedented and horrific scale.” While the investigation is still ongoing to determine the exact causes of the fire, testimonies from survivors and initial evidence from authorities are allowing for a gradual reconstruction of the events of this fateful night. From celebration to nightmare It was around 1:30 a.m. Hundreds of people, mostly young, were celebrating the arrival of the new year in the basement of Constellation. Suddenly, smoke was detected, as reported by a witness who immediately alerted the police authorities, according to Frédéric Gisler, head of the local police. According to testimonies from those present, sparklers attached to bottles, held by a person on someone else's shoulders, may have caused the fire. A photo taken by a survivor and obtained by BFMTV shows the scene, but it cannot be confirmed with certainty that it is the moment that caused the tragedy.
