Critical Water Situation in Cyprus: Dam Levels at 9.3%

The situation in Cyprus' dams is critical, with a capacity of only 9.3% as of December 23rd, compared to 25.4% during the same period last year. Despite recent rainfall, the benefit to the dams has been limited, as the rain was unevenly distributed, with some areas receiving significantly more than others. The water that has been collected is largely degraded, with algae and mud, requiring additional processing. Former Director of the Meteorological Department, Kleanthi Nikolaidis, points out that the change in rainfall distribution should not necessarily lead to the construction of new dams, due to the high cost and difficulties in finding suitable locations. He also notes the increase in geological phenomena, such as sinkholes, which are linked to the over-extraction of groundwater.
