Cypriot EU Presidency: Ukraine at the Forefront - Zelenskyy to Meet von der Leyen, Costa, and Christodoulides in Nicosia

Cyprus is at the center of international diplomacy with the start of its Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The presence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, along with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa, in Cyprus next Wednesday, highlights the importance of the Ukrainian issue for the EU. Zelenskyy personally contacted President Christodoulides expressing his interest in attending the inauguration ceremony, which is interpreted as recognition of Cyprus's role. A meeting is being scheduled between the four leaders to discuss the Ukrainian issue, following Zelenskyy's recent contact with Donald Trump. Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos emphasized that Ukraine is the top issue on the agenda of the Cypriot Presidency and that Cyprus remains steadfast in its support for Ukraine, seeking a just and lasting peace. The Cypriot Presidency aims to strengthen the EU's strategic autonomy and its geopolitical connection with the southeastern Mediterranean, the Middle East, the Gulf, and India. At the same time, it will focus on addressing issues that directly affect the daily lives of European citizens. Nicosia seeks to promote a European Union open to the world. President Christodoulides stated that the central motto of the Presidency will be “An Autonomous Union. Open to the World.” The success of the Presidency will be judged by Cyprus's ability to manage complex geopolitical issues, such as the Ukrainian one, and to promote European values and interests in a changing international environment.
