Cyprus Achieves Significant Reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emission Intensity

Cyprus has recorded a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emission intensity of 28.9% during the period 2013-2024, according to Eurostat data. This reduction is higher than the EU average, which reached 34%. The overall reduction in emissions in the EU was 20%, alongside a 20% increase in gross value added. Compared to other EU countries, Cyprus ranks higher in terms of reducing emission intensity, surpassing countries such as Luxembourg, Lithuania, and Austria. The largest reductions were recorded in Estonia, Ireland, and Finland, while Malta was the only country to experience an increase. In 2024, total greenhouse gas emissions in the EU amounted to 3.3 billion tonnes of CO₂ equivalent, a decrease of 1% compared to 2023 and 20% compared to 2013. In Cyprus, the electricity and natural gas sector remains the main source of emissions, accounting for more than 40% of the total. At the EU level, the electricity and natural gas sector saw the largest improvement in emission intensity, with a decrease of 53%. This was followed by services and manufacturing. Conversely, agriculture, forestry, and fishing saw an increase in emission intensity of 21%.
