Cyprus' Agriculture Enters the Digital Age

Cyprus is entering a new era for its primary sector with the official inauguration of the 'PHAENOTYPOS' Strategic Infrastructure at the Tochni Experimental Station. The infrastructure, a significant investment by the Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF), is designed to shield Cypriot agriculture from the challenges of climate change and transform the Agricultural Research Institute (ARI) into a regional innovation hub. 'PHAENOTYPOS' is a smart platform that leverages cutting-edge technologies, such as sensors, cameras, real-time data networks, and machine learning models, to monitor plant responses to extreme conditions. The goal is to translate scientific knowledge into practical solutions for farmers, helping them adapt to new climatic conditions and optimize resource use. The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment described the infrastructure as a survival tool for Cypriot agriculture, given the rising temperatures and decreasing rainfall. She emphasized that it will enable the selection of varieties that are resistant to the new conditions and help optimize the use of water and fertilizers. By the end of 2026, 'PHAENOTYPOS' will focus on three pilot studies: the selection of carob genotypes resistant to drought, the production of high-yielding animal feed under water stress conditions, and the evaluation of vegetables (rocket and lettuce) for reduced nitrate levels and increased nutritional value. The project is the result of collaboration between ARI, the University of Cyprus, CUT, the Frederick Research Center, and private companies.
