Cyprus and Greece to Establish Joint Committee for Justice Cooperation

The Ministers of Justice of Cyprus and Greece, Kostas Fytiris and Giorgos Floridis, decided to establish a permanent inter-ministerial committee for the systematic monitoring of pending issues and the effective implementation of agreed matters in the field of justice. The committee will meet every six months. During their meeting in Athens, the two ministers exchanged views on various issues related to their portfolios, with Mr. Floridis informing Mr. Fytiris about the reforms in the Greek justice system and the faster administration of justice. In addition, the possibility of signing a memorandum of cooperation between Cyprus and Greece was discussed, focusing on the monitoring of maritime zones, the fight against smuggling and drug trafficking, the prevention of organized crime, and the exchange of information. Particular emphasis was placed on the creation of a Cypriot Coast Guard, utilizing the experience of Greece. In the field of internal security, the common challenge of illegal immigration and the need to strengthen borders were highlighted. It was agreed to allocate positions in the Officers’ School of the Greek Police to members of the Cypriot Police, with the aim of enhancing training and interoperability.
