Cyprus Bids Farewell to George Vassiliou - Final Respects to the Politician, Entrepreneur, and Visionary

George Vassiliou, the third President of the Republic of Cyprus, was laid to rest in Nicosia on Saturday, with many paying tribute to the politician, entrepreneur, and visionary. Former Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou emphasized the national loss and Vassiliou's simplicity despite his high positions. He referred to the President's childhood, education, professional career, and the founding of KEMA, as well as his family life with his wife Androulla and their children. Mr. Papapetrou highlighted that Vassiliou's presidency marked a period of progress and modernization for Cyprus, while acknowledging his efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue and combat corruption. He pointed out that Vassiliou prioritized finding a solution, but in case of failure, the responsibility would be attributed to the other side. At the same time, he developed intense diplomacy to renew international solidarity. The speaker also mentioned Vassiliou's attempt to collaborate with progressive forces in the Turkish Cypriot community, expressing regret for the absence of leaders like Talat or Akinci during his term. Instead, he faced Denktas and his divisive approaches. Finally, Mr. Papapetrou emphasized Vassiliou's work on modernizing the state, focusing on combating nepotism and party patronage, as well as the need to dissolve the insurgents and criminals, both domestic and international.
