Cyprus Electricity Authority Presents Power Challenges at IRENA Assembly

The Cyprus Electricity Authority (CEA) presented the challenges it faces in the electricity sector at the 16th Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in Abu Dhabi. Marios Pappoutis, Assistant Director of Networks, represented the CEA and presented the important projects of the Distribution System Operator (DSO) to be implemented by 2026, such as energy storage systems, smart meters, and substation automation. The conference focused on the decarbonization of industry and the utilization of artificial intelligence in the energy sector. Mr. Pappoutis highlighted the specific challenges facing Cyprus due to its island nature, such as maintaining the balance between supply and demand and integrating renewable energy sources into the grid. Specifically, he mentioned the need for targeted investments in the grid, energy storage, and flexibility, as the lack of interconnection with other countries increases the cost of electricity. The CEA seeks a change in culture and greater active involvement of energy users in energy management and the provision of flexibility to ensure the stability and resilience of the network. The CEA's presentation at the IRENA Assembly is part of efforts to promote renewable energy sources and improve energy security in Cyprus, while addressing the unique challenges posed by its island geography.
