Cyprus Faces Dilemma: Greenland or Gaza? After Invitation from Trump

Published January 18, 2026, 19:14

Cyprus is in a diplomatic dilemma, having received an invitation from Donald Trump to participate in a plan for Gaza, while the European Union is simultaneously discussing its potential involvement in the region. The invitation also includes Turkey, adding another dimension to the situation. President Christodoulides recognizes the importance of the invitation but wants a common European approach before giving a definitive answer. The Government emphasizes that it is carefully examining Trump's proposal and will make a decision based on the analysis of the data. At the same time, Cyprus is at the center of discussions about its role in the Middle East region. Some believe that the invitation from Trump recognizes the importance of this role, while others express reservations. The Government denies reports about the obligation to pay financial amounts for participation in the plan. Other European countries, such as Greece, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Spain, and Hungary, have also received the same invitation. However, the possibility of European countries rejecting the invitation if the situation in the region escalates cannot be ruled out.
