Cyprus Fully Prepared to Assume EU Council Presidency, President Says

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, stated that Cyprus is fully prepared to assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from January 1, 2026. The announcement was made after a visit by the President to the Conference Center facilities, which will host events during the Presidency. Christodoulides emphasized the importance of a successful Presidency for strengthening Cyprus within the EU and highlighted that European autonomy and an EU open to the world are key objectives. He thanked the involved agencies and ministers for the organizational preparation, including the Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, and the Ministries of Transport and Justice. He expressed his expectation for concrete results during the Presidency, focusing on achieving European autonomy and promoting an EU that is both strong and open. The President acknowledged that the assumption of the Presidency coincides with a critical period for the EU, particularly regarding the Multiannual Financial Framework. He stressed the need for the new framework to reflect the Union's priorities for the next seven years. Furthermore, he committed to continuing support for Ukraine, expressing Cyprus's understanding of the difficulties the country faces. Finally, Christodoulides referred to defense and security issues, as well as the competitiveness of the EU, as important priorities of the Cypriot Presidency. He expressed optimism for positive results in these areas, in cooperation with other member states, the European Commission, and the European Parliament.
