Cyprus: Labor Advisory Board to Meet Amidst Minimum Wage Disputes

The Labor Advisory Board will meet tomorrow, Friday, for the first time in months, with the new Minister of Labor, Marinos Mousiouttas, presiding. The meeting is expected to be particularly interesting as it is the first after the decision on the minimum wage, with employers and trade unions having expressed strong objections. The trade unions are calling for immediate changes to the minimum wage decree and have submitted a memorandum to the President of the Republic with four key points: the minimum wage, the issue of foreign workers, the extension of collective agreements, and the promotion of the Ergani 2 system. Employers, for their part, disagree with the level of the minimum wage, warning of cascading effects on the economy, such as rising prices and sustainability problems for businesses. They emphasize that the cost for the employer, including contributions, is significantly higher than the set wage. The OEB stresses that the discussion on the minimum wage has ended with the issuance of the decree and that any revision would undermine the tripartite cooperation and lead to chaos in labor relations.
