Cyprus MP Denies Assault Allegations, Challenges Exclusion from Ballot

MP Nikos Sykas of the DISY party has given a lengthy statement to the Limassol Police regarding allegations of violence against his former partner in Athens, which were later withdrawn. The testimony came after the Supreme Court lifted his parliamentary immunity, deeming there was sufficient evidence to warrant further investigation. Mr. Sykas vehemently denied any act of violence or threat. Police consider him a suspect in four offenses: exercising violence, psychological violence, assault causing bodily harm, and threats. The investigation continues with additional testimonies and the expectation of further evidence from Greece. Despite the withdrawal of the complaint, the Police are proceeding with the investigation due to the seriousness of the allegations and the possibility of criminal prosecution. Simultaneously, Mr. Sykas is considering appealing to the Supreme Court if his party decides to exclude him from the upcoming election ballot, citing the presumption of innocence and the need to uphold the party's statutes.
