Cyprus Shares Experience with Syria on Missing Persons Mechanisms

A team of activists from the bicommunal organization 'Together We Can,' representing families of missing persons from the events of 1963-1974, presented their work and experiences to a delegation from Syria seeking to establish their own mechanism for searching for missing individuals. The meeting took place on the Green Line, at the Ledra Palace hotel's bicommunal container. The 'Together We Can' organization is compiling a 'guide' outlining 'dos and don'ts' for the Syrian authorities based on their experiences with the Cyprus Missing Persons Investigation Committee (CMP). A key point highlighted was the limited direct involvement of families of the missing in the CMP process in Cyprus, contrasting with the approach of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic (IIMP), which includes families' organizations.
