Dams Remain Critically Low: Heavy Rainfall Needed

The inflow of water into Cyprus' dams in January was very small, just 400,000 cubic meters, due to limited rainfall. The A' Technical Engineer of the Water Development Department, Marios Chatzikostis, stated that to improve the situation, torrential rains are needed in February or March. Dam capacity is only at 11%, compared to 26% during the same period last year. Mr. Chatzikostis explained that to be considered satisfactory, the inflow of water should be continuous at 3 million cubic meters per day. He also mentioned that snowfall helps maintain the flow of rain towards the dams, as the ground is already saturated. It is noted that the rainfall in Greece does not affect Cyprus, as the amounts are very different (19 millimeters in Cyprus versus 150 millimeters in Attica). To improve the situation, similar rainfall is needed in Cyprus, but at a rate that avoids disasters.
