Danish PM Travels to Greenland After Talks with Rutte

The Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, announced on X that she will travel to Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, today to meet with her counterpart, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, following talks with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte. Meanwhile, the Danish Foreign Minister noted that talks with the US on the security of the island will begin “very soon”. The meeting between Frederiksen and Nielsen will take place after US President Donald Trump withdrew his threats to acquire Greenland by force, following a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Davos. During their conversation, the two men reached a “framework agreement” for Greenland, the details of which remain unclear. Frederiksen will travel to Nuuk directly from Brussels, where she met with Rutte, who today emphasized on X that they are working together to strengthen defense and deterrence in the Arctic region. “We agree that NATO must strengthen its commitment to the Arctic. Defense and security in the Arctic is a matter for the whole Alliance,” Frederiksen posted on X, accompanying her post with a photo of herself alongside Rutte in Brussels. The Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen also pointed out that the talks between Denmark, Greenland and the US regarding the security of the Arctic island will begin “very soon”.
