Data Protection Commissioner Responds to Concerns Regarding Social Support Agency

The Data Protection Commissioner, Maria Christofidou, issued a statement clarifying her positions regarding the Social Support Agency, which were reported by the media and discussed in the House Institutions Committee. The discussion concerned the proposed law on donations and contributions to the state and other entities, specifically the provision for publishing a list of personal data to the Parliament. The Commissioner explained that she had recommended the removal of the specific article, as the publication of the data would make her secondarily responsible for processing, potentially violating the principles of GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation). This could occur due to the principles of legality and data minimization. The House Institutions Committee raised the question of why the posting and submission of this information to Parliament is not considered legitimate in the proposed regulation, while it is permitted in the case of political parties. The Commissioner replied that the law on political parties had not been submitted to the Authority for comment and that the relevant provision had been introduced before the implementation of GDPR. Maria Christofidou emphasized that the Authority has not contradicted itself, but remains committed to exercising its duties within the legal framework of GDPR and national legislation. The announcement aims to restore accurate information to both citizens and the media.
