Decline in Asylum Applications in the EU – Cyprus's October Figures

According to Eurostat data, asylum applications in the European Union decreased by 28% in October 2025 compared to October 2024. A total of 62,010 new applications were recorded, compared to 86,470 the previous year. However, on a monthly basis, there was a 6% increase compared to September 2025 (58,495 applications). Greece and Cyprus recorded the highest rates of asylum applicants per hundred thousand inhabitants, with 58.1 and 33.9 respectively, followed by Spain with 26.3. The majority of applications came from Venezuelans (8,140), Afghans (5,920), Bangladeshis (3,400), and Syrians (2,915). Spain, Italy, France, and Germany received 74% of the asylum applications. Specifically, Spain received 12,885 applications, Italy 12,650, France 11,245, and Germany 8,815. In addition, 1,710 unaccompanied minors applied for asylum in the EU in October. The most unaccompanied minors came from Somalia (245), Egypt (215), Eritrea (200), Afghanistan (190), and Venezuela (180). The countries that received the largest number of unaccompanied minors were the Netherlands (350), Greece (325), Germany (245), and Spain (215).
