Deep, Persistent, and Invisible: Poverty in Cyprus

A new study by the Social Situation Monitor (SSM) reveals that poverty in Cyprus is deep, persistent, and often invisible. The poverty gap, when net wealth is taken into account, is larger than indicated by simple income measurements. This is linked to high private debt, low savings, increased housing costs, and limited assets among young people and families with children. The study highlights the vulnerable position of these groups in economic shocks, as a lack of asset reserves makes it difficult to cope with unexpected expenses. The situation requires targeted policies to strengthen economic security and reduce poverty in Cyprus.
