Dire Straits at Cyprus' Only Psychiatric Hospital: Patients' Safety at Risk

Athlassa Hospital, the only psychiatric facility in Cyprus, is in a critical state, with its infrastructure deemed unsuitable and dangerous for both patients and staff. Despite repeated reports of deficiencies and dire conditions over the past decade, the situation remains unresolved. A recent structural assessment highlighted the need for demolition, while even renovated wards exhibit safety concerns. Andreas Andreou, President of the Mental Health Nurses Branch of PASYDY, emphasizes the chronic undervaluation of Mental Health Services in Cyprus and the failure to deliver on funding promises. Although three new buildings have been handed over as part of the first phase of the project for a new hospital, the commencement of the second phase, concerning the construction of the new hospital, remains uncertain. The possibility of a complete closure of the hospital is being considered, but raises the dilemma of caring for the patients already admitted, while the condition of the administrative areas is also poor.
