Ecumenical Patriarchate Responds to Moscow: False News, Insults, and Fabricated Information

The Ecumenical Patriarchate responded to the attack launched by Russian state agencies against Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, describing the accusations as “fantastical scenarios,” “false news,” “insults,” and “fabricated information.” The announcement emphasizes that the Mother Church of Constantinople – also Mother of the Church of Russia – expresses its deep sorrow over the attack. The Patriarchate notes that since 2018, when it granted autocephaly to the Church of Ukraine, it has avoided commenting on similar attacks from Russian centers and individuals. However, the escalation of the attack by Russian state agencies makes it necessary to express its sorrow. The announcement stresses that the Mother Church will continue its ministry and ecumenical mission despite the attacks. The independence and mission of the Ecumenical Patriarchate remain unwavering. This response is a clear statement defending the autonomy of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and its ecumenical mission against Russia's attempts to undermine its influence.
