Energy Communities: A Promising Avenue for Cyprus's Green Transition

A recent study by the University of Frederick highlighted a significant gap in the proper functioning of energy communities in Cyprus and Europe. Energy communities are a crucial tool for achieving the green transition, enabling energy autonomy, cost reduction, and the promotion of clean energy through the participation of citizens, businesses, and local authorities. Laws were recently passed allowing municipal and community councils to establish or participate in energy communities, aiming to play a dynamic role in the energy market and reduce prices through synergies. However, the study shows a lack of understanding of the importance of energy communities and the benefits they can bring. Unlike Cyprus, countries like Greece have already established over 1,000 energy communities, with significant citizen and business participation. In the European Union, at least two million people participate in more than 7,700 energy communities, and participation is expected to increase. Energy communities offer multiple benefits, such as empowering citizens, promoting local development, and protecting the environment. A notable example is the energy community under construction in Pyrgos Tillyrias.
