Environmental Group Raises Concerns Over Spraying in Paphos, Municipality Responds

The Chlorakas Environmental and Cultural Association (PPOA) has expressed strong concern over the extensive spraying of herbicides on sidewalks and roads in Paphos, arguing that it is an unnatural practice that pollutes the soil, groundwater, and harms biodiversity. The PPOA emphasizes that alternative solutions, such as lawnmowers, exist and raises questions about the approvals and controls of the chemicals used. The Paphos Municipality responded that the use of herbicides is limited to situations where the safety of workers is at risk, such as on steep slopes, and is avoided near water sources. The Municipality's goal is to prevent fires and control rodents. The head of the Public Health and Environment Department of the Paphos Municipality, Dr. Christos Christou, assured that all safety instructions and regulations regarding dosage and use of chemicals are followed. Dr. Christou reiterated that mechanical weeding methods are preferred, but the use of herbicides is necessary in certain cases for worker safety and environmental protection. The Municipality cooperates with the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) to ensure compliance with its policies.
