Erhiurman Proposes Dialogue Mechanism Between National Guard and Occupation Forces

Tufan Erhiurman has proposed the creation of a direct dialogue mechanism between the National Guard and the occupying forces in Cyprus, as part of a ten-point package submitted during negotiations. The purpose of the proposal is to ensure immediate communication and avoid delays in the event of issues along the Green Line. Mr. Erhiurman referred to recent tensions caused by the activities of Greek Cypriot farmers in the dead zone area, while also expressing his dissatisfaction with the subsequent statements from the Greek Cypriot side. He emphasized the need for the United Nations to faithfully implement existing agreements and for communication channels to function effectively. He believes that direct contact between the two sides will help prevent misunderstandings and resolve problems more quickly. Mr. Erhiurman stressed that the responsibility for strengthening preventive dialogue and avoiding inflammatory statements lies with the leadership of both communities. This proposal appears to aim at creating a more effective and direct way of managing issues that arise along the Green Line. The proposal comes at a time of increased tension in Cyprus, with occasional reports of violations of the dead zone and disagreements over the implementation of existing agreements. The creation of such a mechanism could help reduce the risk of escalation and promote trust between the two sides.
