Erhurman: Peace Cannot Be Imposed Through Threats – Solution Requires Equality and Security

Tufan Erhurman, the Turkish Cypriot leader, stated that peace in Cyprus cannot be imposed through threats or military pressure. He emphasized that a solution must be based on the equality, sovereignty, and security of the Turkish Cypriot people. He referred to reports in the Greek Cypriot press regarding new lawsuits over “property rights” and responded that the Turkish Cypriot side also has its own legal and international strategies. Erhurman stressed that the desire for a solution and peace must be demonstrated both at the negotiating table and through actions outside of it, and that the final solution should be ratified by referendums in both communities. He also pointed out that targeting individuals and worsening relations between the two communities will not lead to positive outcomes.
